Just got back from Hermann, MO. We took the train over from Kansas City's Union Station Friday afternoon, stayed in a local B&B, rented bikes down town and tooled around all day Sat. eating & drinking. Highly recommend the Stone Hill restaurant for dinner (or lunch). German-inspired food with good wine pairings. It was a little difficult to do numerous tastings, ride bikes and buy bottles of wine to bring home, but one of the bikes we rented (tandem) had a basket which we piled high with bottles and goodies. For $20 more/person you can upgrade to business class on the train and stretch out, watch a movie on your computer or DVD player; the cafe car serves drinks and cheese/crackers (no matter how hungry you are, don't eat anything else but the cheese & crackers unless you want to take your life into your own hands). Much more comfy and almost as fast as driving (3:45 from KC and 4:00 on the return). Every time we visit Hermann we're surprised at some of the really good wines to be had (and good microbrewries as well). Of course, there are some wineries with not so hot selections, but you usually can't go wrong with Stone Hill or Adam Puchta. Hermannhof has some nice bottles as well. Wouldn't recommend going during Octoberfest (4 weekends in Oct.) unless you're into lots of crowds and long lines. Sept. and May are lovely. Charming town with lots of antiques and quaint stores. Not a huge restaurant selection and most close early (8 - 9pm). Does anyone know of any other good restaurants we should try next time we go? We always eat at Stone Hill. Thanks.
