Tortilleria La Talpense, San Fernando - Fantastic!!

I went to a birthday party in Sylmar on Saturday night and they were serving food from Tortilleria La Talpense in San Fernando (north side of Maclay just west of Glenoaks- past a church).
One word: WOW! We had the Carnitas, Chile Verde (pork) and Chile Colorado (beef), rice & beans and some of the best homemade tortillas I have ever had. All of it fantastic. SO fantastic!! I seemed to have missed the beans on the first go-around, but am so glad I noticed them the next one. These are some of the best frijoles I have ever had. Eaten with those tortillas, you will be hard pressed to find a better meal. Okay, I was able to - add some of the Chile Colorado to it and some salsa, a little salt – sheer HEAVEN!
The Chile Colorado has a nice heat to it and the thick brick-red sauce is so flavorful and deep. Just wonderful. Those who cannot tolerate the heat ate the equally-delicious Verde, but the Colorado is definitely my favorite.
On my way home from a funeral yesterday, I decided I would try to find it and was so happy when I did. They close at 8, but let me in – I got there about 8 on the dot. I ended up getting their largest tub of beans ($4), medium salsa ($2) (I had them mix the red and green together), Chile Colorado (small $4, large $8) and a dozen tortillas (still warm - $4). Then I had a delicious Naranja Jugos ($2) for the road. Lupe is the owner and she has been there for 16 years. She is from Jalisco and so sweet. I was singing her praises and she was so modest and humble.
They have won the San Fernando and Olivera Street Menudo competitions a total of 9 times – not too shabby! They only serve Menudo, Birria and Pozole on weekends.
If you are in the area, or even if you are not, this is a place to try. It is kind of hard to find, but once you do the search is worth it. They have a small market with some canned goods and spices and several tables. Nothing fancy, but serviceable and definitely always with a smile! They also have burritos ($3.99-5.99), tacos hard or soft (1.99-2.50), quesadillas (1.99-4.50), tortas (3.50), a la carte items: chile rellenos (2.50), tamales (1.25), sopes (3.50), enchiladas (1.99-2.25); breakfast items, aguas, chicharron, lengua and chorizo. Several combinations with the above-listed items (6.50-8.50). They cater for parties as well.

Unfortunately, their menu does not indicate their hours and I forgot to look, but I know they are open until 8 on Mondays.
