More on Toro... (long)

Was very excited to go last night, as I am a huge fan of Ken Oringer. Sadly, I was very dissapointed. There was about an hour wait, which I expected, so we had a glass of wine and some marcona almonds to snack on at the bar. Nice cozy space, good energy.

Problems started when we were seated. There were three of us-- we ordered 7 tapas to start, figuring we'd get more if we needed. It took 20 minutes for our first dish to arrive... salt cod fritters with lemon rings, which were excellent. 20 minutes after that we got our next dish, an octopus ceviche, which we also enjoyed... had to ask for bread (wanted to soak up the sauce).. shouldn't have to ask. Another 20 min. pass... wine glasses had been empty for a while at this point, and no waiter in sight. When our waiter finally came over, he asked if we were all set or wanted anything else... um... the five other dishes we ordered??? He then had to ask us what we ordered and seemed flustered/stressed... We told him what we ordered, and ten min. later the rest of the dishes arrived, all at the same time.

Had the Pan con tomate (good), wood roasted eggplant (ok - kinda dissapointing), tortilla espanola (good), wild mushrooms w/ olive oil, garlic and farm egg (ok), and grilled corn (excellent). Service continued to be awful-- they kept trying to clear the plates before we were done. I think they were waiting for our table for a large party that had arrived, so it went from ignored/slow/forgotten to being pushed out the door. We were all still STARVING, but after the absurd service and over $150 bill before tip (we each had 2 glasses of wine while waiting at the bar for an hour, and a third after we sat down), there was no way we were staying for more. I had such high hopes for this place... I know it has only been open for a week, so I'll probably give it another try in 2 months... but they really need to work on the service. And if I had ordered enough food to not be hungry, the price would quickly get up there. I think it could potentially be a good spot for a Sat. 5 p.m. snack and glass of wine... or late night snack... but not for the reasonable weekly dinner, as I'd been hoping for!!
