Toro Kakuni ( deep stewed fatty tuna ) is one of the most traditional japanese home cooking.
it's a stewed fatty tuna that is cooked with soy sauce,
sweet rice vinegar,etc... and should be stewed for long
time - 4~6 hrs, sometimes even more - until tuna gets in dark brown chocolate color.it almost looks like a beef goulash.this dish usually is served as an appetizer or a side dish, and especially goes well with Sake.
Win 49 was originally opened as a Kushi Katsu ( breaded
fries on skewer. one of the most popular bar food in japan, especially western area )place, but they serve many of small dishies of japanese home cooking too.
although the Kushi Katsu is just OK - far from a good
real Kushi Katsu in japan - , their small dishies are
very good and authentic.
the Toro Kakuni is one of these samll dishies, and truly outstanding. even in japan, it's pretty hard to find this level of Toro Kakuni.
Win 49 makes this incredible dish only in winter, because winter is the best season for tuna.so don't
this place is owned by Tomoe sushi, so that the quality of the fish is very good.
Toro Kakuni is $4 as a side.but also you can get this as a part of Bento Box which is a choice of many entree - Kushi Katsu, Katsu curry, Unagi, Tempura , Gyu-don,etc -, and you can choose two sides that include the Toro Kakuni. this bento box comes with Edamame, Hijiki( stewed see weed ), aome japanese pickls, and miso soup. it'sonly $7! this is definitely one of the best deals in NY.
