Tony's Little Italy Authentic Chicago Deep Dish- (review)

Finally went to one of the few spots in the Los Angeles area for Authentic Chicago deep dish pizza last night- Tony's Little Italy in Placentia (thanks, hounds, for the rec). It ended up being one of those experiences where between bites after quietly eating the first slice all I could say was "Oh My God, this is soooo good". We ordered the stuffed crust (Must Get The Stuffed Crust)- half as their special sausage with mushrooms, peppers and onions and the other half ham and pineapple per my hubbys request. The pie was probably about 2 inches deep (a knife and fork pie) with a very tender crisp crust that rose above the toppings. In the middle there was a -very- thick layer of wonderfully gooey white cheese, then our toppings, all smothered in a perfectly seasoned, tangy red sauce and then topped off with a thick layer of parmesan. It was beautiful. The side with the ham and pineapple wasn't my favorite, it just didn't seem to "go" but the sausage, peppers and onions became a transcendant experience combined with the crisp tasty crust, the tangy sauce and that cheese. We ate in the restaurant, since we live a few cities away. There were a few other couples eating there as well, there is only maybe 8 small tables and one outside. (Interesting side note, most of them were eating the pasta dishes instead of pizza- possibly a must try in the future) The business is obviously family owned, obviously italian, and obviously from chicago--- as gathered from all of the signs and decorations in the restaurant. Very very nice people, the woman that brought our pizza actually served us each slices onto our plates before she left and everyone made it a point to say goodbye and thank you as we walked out the door. Most definitely will be back for that pizza- I'd love to try the extra thin crust as well and I'll have to try the eggplant parmesan. I hadn't realized this place was so close to my college for a stop on the way home for dinner- I have a feeling this place is going to get me into lots of trouble with my doctor!!!
