help for tonight - need alternates to Great Bay/Eastern Standard

So I am taking a friend out for her birthday dinner tonight and, because it's convenient to both of us and we haven't been yet, we were planning on either Eastern Standard or Great Bay for an early, pre-rush meal.

My problem is that since we decided on this, I've read some reviews on each that have me wondering: is this where I want to take someone for her birthday? We're not looking for a mind-blowing experience, necessarily, but we're both semi-serious foodies and would really enjoy a meal with that special combination of service, atmosphere and well-crafted, interesting food. I feel like from the sounds of things, these two places may need to improve their service and consistency before they could provide such an experience.

Let me emphasize that we are looking for seafood - or at least a raw bar for oysters before the main course, so both of these work. And Eastern Standard does have outside seating, another of our preferences.

Am I looking for too much? Should I not be so picky? Can someone vouch for either of these places, or suggest an alternative in the city that may be a better bet (that we could still get into tonight)? Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!
