DH and I had to get away for a couple of days, so after some last minute planning we headed off to Cleveland from Michigan. Arrived at noon on the first day and departed at 7pm the next day for home. We did some sightseeing too....not all about food!
Here are some notes about our eating (we're on foodie trip detox right now):
Happy Dog on Detroit Ave: great service and beer list; do it yourself dogs were delish with a great snap! We met up with other family (6 of us) and we put some tables together; they had a baby in tow too! People of all likes are here (business people in suits, construction workers, 20 somethings with their parents, etc). You can't beat the price. We tried a lot of the different side sauces for their dogs which were very plump. My fave was the honey/mustard/black truffle and the chipotle hollandaise. We each tried 6 different ones (cut up each of our dogs into pces so we could try a bite of each). Ditto on the beers. We tipped very generously as they were extremely attentive.
The Greenhouse Tavern: DH and I always share plates. Crispy shallot vinaigrette chicken wings were delicious and tangy; a little over sauced for me. Lamb burger was juicy and cooked to perfection. Delicious topping, but were drinking all night (little too much salt, but that's probably why it was good); buttered popcorn pot de creme was wonderful. I am a fan of Kale; had their buttermilk kale salad and was not disappointed. The only thing is that I felt slightly rushed by our waitress. Not a biggie; but thought I should mention it.
Bue Point Grille: Went for happy hour. Loved the oysters and gulf shrimp, had some champagne and the Hemingway Daiquiri. Would go again for Happy Hour; not sure about full prices though.
Lolita Happy Hour: Had a few Betas and Margarita Martinis -- not just me! We had the Lolita Burger charred eggplant dip and the half mac and cheese with chicken, goat cheese and rosemary. I adored the fried brussel sprouts. Food was very good but service was OK...
West Side Market: Where has this been all my life? Love it! Perfect size. Loaded up on mexican take home fare from Orale Kitchen (salsas, tamales, enchiladas) since we brought a large cooler. Not the cheapest, but delish. Having those for supper tomorrow night! Also had crepes (as good almost as in Paris) and they were piping hot! Well made and flavored and fresh as you can get. I had ham, brie and spinach and the only suggestion would be to use imported French ham. I found the ham too heavy and thick for the delicateness of the crepe. Hubby had banana and nutella (and then had a breakfast one). Highly recommended.
Brought home bread from the guy that makes the artisan organic bread, as well as popcorn for my nieces. At one of the cheese places, I found Buffalo milk butter; bought that and an Easter lamb butter (bought 5 for family) which is half the price that I would pay at home (if I could find it closer than 3 hours away). Had the gyros from Steve's. My DH refers to the lady there as the "gyro nazi" with a head nod to Seinfeld! Their sauce is like tzatziki but tastes like it has chipotle in it! HUGE!!!! If I had bought a larger cooler, I would have bought the goat head and ribs I saw as well as some beautiful fish across from the gyro place. Next time, it'll be my last stop before going home.
Jack Frost Donuts: Picked up two dozen to drop off at work the next morning. By the time DH got to them, the coworkers had eaten them all! They've been texting him about them all day! Apparently, we actually have to eat one BEFORE bringing them to work. Bought banana split, lemon, Elvis, maple bacon, smores, yeast, french silk pie, etc. They lookED beautiful like cupcakes.
All in all, we will be back for a football game and some good food and drinks, probably in the fall when weather is good but not scorching! Need to head to Tremont area and check out more of the Gateway and Warehouse area restaurants.
Thanks for all your help; we'll be looking forward to our next trip!
