First Time at Angelini Osteria

After such glowing reviews herein, we just had to try it. Granted, it was the Saturday night before Valentine's, and I think lots of people were celebrating tonight, but my husband and I had 6 p.m. reservations and didn't get out until 8:40, and that was without the desserts we'd ordered that the waiter never brought. For starters, we shared the octopus and arugula salad, and it was wonderful. Crispy and succulent octopus and very fresh greens. Dressing didn't overpower and the true flavors shone though. Unfortunately, the service seemed to deteriorate as the evening wore on. It didn't help that in the loud, tiny room, we couldn't understand barely a word of our waiter's thick Italian accent, although he was very warm and sweet. It took at least half an hour to get our second course, the bambolotti pasta, which has also received great reviews here. I like my pasta very al dente, but IMHO this pasta could have used another 30 to 60 seconds cooking time, as it was a bit too chewy. The flavors were wonderful though, and the dish grew on us the more we ate. Our main courses took another hour to receive, from the time we received the pasta, and that's a long time when one of us doesn't drink, with no apology or explanation from our waiter. My husband had the bisteco, and it was delicious, except that it needed more fire and I had to eat my dover sole alone. The fish was good, but not as exceptional as the dover sole I had in France - it was deboned in the traditional European fashion tableside, but didn't quite compare texturewise to it being right out of the water as in Europe. We each ordered a latte and a dessert, but after about 15 or 20 more minutes, when they failed to arrive, we motioned our waiter over and he didn't even remember us ordering it. Meanwhile, we were given the check, and my hubby was already in the car when our complimentary gelato appeared with the waiter's apology, as it was now 8:40. We will probably go back, but it will be very early on anything but a weekend.
