TERRIBLE service at Milano's Pizzeria on 9th...LONG

After a great UCSF intramurals volleyball win last night (and a CALGARY FLAMES berth-in-the-Stanley-Cup-finals-clinching win!), our team of 8 decided to go to Milanos (on 9th Ave, between Irving and Judah) for some pizza. It was after 9pm, and there was another large table that had been there for a little while, along with some smaller tables. 4 of our party arrived first and were seated in the back of the restaurant, then 4 of us came a little later. After 10 minutes, we still had not received menus (I was in the second group, so I'm not even sure that the server had greeted the table yet). I flagged down a staffperson and asked for menus, and was told "Your waitress will be by in a couple of minutes" after which she proceeded to BUSS A TABLE behind us. Not serve the other large table, but BUSS. Thinking this was *silly*, I went to the front and asked sweetly for some menus. The server there said "oh you haven't gotten menus yet? I'm getting your water, I'll be right there." Fine, I took the menus and headed back. The water came soon after, but then it took another 10-15 minutes for the first person I talked to (henceforth called the busser) to come to take orders. We were so hungry I had begun to write our orders on a napkin to just walk up to the front to give them to someone.

The busser must have been having a REALLY bad day because she was so rude it was almost unbelievable. Two of us ordered Budweisers (right there on the menu) and were told "You can't have that. It's on the menu but we don't carry it. Want a Hardcore apple cider?" First of all, no apology for not carrying it, and second, what kind of substitution is a cider?? After ordering another beer, those two ordered a small salad and a pizza at which point we were asked "Is that it for the table?"

So we all got ordered up, drinks came in a decent amount of time (though she arrived with two unordered Hefeweisens that, thank goodness, were left with us for free). Also, for some reason, drinks were not placed but rather slammed on the table. The salad came soon after.

Then, the wait. We waited for our pizza. We waited for a looong time. 45 minutes, to be exact. At around 9:30 we had ordered 3 pies, 2 smalls and 1 large. For a pizzeria, at 9:30, that had a few tables occupied, this should not be a huge burden. But at 10:15 we got the first small pizza (and this was the first time we'd seen a staff member since we ordered). After literally 10 minutes with no other food in sight, the busser casually tells the couple who ordered the small to "go ahead and start, the other food will still be 5 minutes."

FINALLY the other pizzas came, and we ate. The pizza itself was ok. Not bad, not terrific, but ok. A thin crust that was crispy all the way through, a good amount of cheese, generous toppings. But NOT WORTH it. We ordered the check right away fearing it would take half an hour to get, and left. However, the worst part was that given that our table was for 8, they automatically included a 20% gratuity. That's a crime. By now the busser had sweetened up, telling us to have a good night. She did apologize for being understaffed when the second batch of pizzas came, but if ever there was a case of too-little-too-late, this was IT.

Now, why didn't we just call the manager, or get up and leave? Good questions. I think we were so euphoric about our win and happy with the company that we couldn't be bothered to cause a fuss. But to be honest, I'm not sure what would have happened had we done so. There did not appear to be a manager on site, and dammit we were hungry.

Bottom line, I will never go there again. Second chances are well and good but I was so put off by the surly, dilatory service that the just-ok pizza and mediocre ambiance will not bring me back.
