Tere's Mexican Grill

I live close by this place (Tere's Mexican Grill, 5870 Melrose Ave., just west of Vine (323) 468-9345) and have been going there, off and on, since they opened. I've tried many of the items on their menu, and have mostly thought their food was pretty good, but nothing really bowled me over. I always really wanted to love the place, because the owners are really nice, and it's close to my house, and they make their own tortillas (which, btw, make really, really good tortilla chips), and they have a nice salsa bar, but everything I'd tried was pretty good, but not great.

Until last Saturday. For the first time I tried one of Tere's chili relleno burritos, which was absolutely sublime. Not too greasy, but soft and rich and wonderfully creamy, with perfect refried beans, an excellent chili relleno, and just a touch of crema. Absolutely top notch! By far, the best thing I've had there. You know how sometimes something is so good, the very next day you want to go back and have another? This is like that.

Lots of times I'll try someplace and think it's just okay, but kind of wonder, did I just get unlucky (or stupid) and fail to identify the one or two things they do extremely well? I've even sometimes tried just asking, what's the best thing on your menu? (Unfortunately, that technique, in my experience at least, does not yield reliably good results.) Anyway, at Tere's, persistence finally paid off. They make a kick ass chili relleno burrito, and I will definitely be back more often now that I've found it.
