Went down yesterday with my son and his girlfriend on a glorious fall day. Just the day for a biergarten. Tashmoo's in a vacant lot (easy parking around in the nabe), all built from rough/rustic/reclaimed materials. Long, long communal tables and benches stocked with board games and coloring books, music background heavy on Motown and at an apt level that made conversation easy.
Corridor Sausage selling their pork/chicken/cherry/pistachio pate with baguettes and homemade mustard. Delicious, rustic and mustard rocked with mustard seeds. We also shared pierogies-- cheese, mushroom on a bed of homemade sauerkraut from the People's Pierogi Cooperative, better than any I've ever had anywhere, light, flavorful. A peppered ham with crackers and cheese added some real spice and the bacon bratwurst on a bun with sweet and sour red cabbage was awesome. Sausage smoke wafted in the air, the bar served a wide array of craft beers made here -- stout, porter, I especially liked the Saugatuck IPA.
Mainly, the vibe was so friendly, and neighborly. We saw with some folks and started a spirited game of Candyland...how much fun we had! Everybody talking to everybody. Kids, older people, all just enjoying the day and the games and the food. Just the best about Detroit. We thought we'd stay and hour --- three hours later we were leaving.
One of the best days of the year...can't wait for next year.
