Macarena Tapas in Naperville has recently been offering a Sunday special of "unlimited tapas" for $18.95 per person. The menu for this includes 35 items (about 10 cold plates and the rest hot). This is a good deal which allows you to sample a wide variety of dishes offered by Macarena Tapas. As with all real tapas places, plates are not large servings, but over the course of a meal, you can eat a lot and enjoy many different flavors. We shared 16 different plates including: calamari (sauteed rings, no breading), tilapia (pan-seared and served with artichoke quarters), crab croquettes, albondigas (meatballs in sauce), grilled beef with horseradish sauce and sauteed onions, grilled asparagus, hot goat cheese in tomato sauce, grilled shrimp, grilled pork, cold "torta" (cheese and spinach pie), and several other dishes. One cold plate I especially liked was sliced beets with blue cheese and almonds in a balsamic dressing.
They have some rules for this offering so as to allow their kitchen to keep up: each diner may order only 2 plates at a time (so we 2 had a total of 4 plates 4 times = 16). This is not at all a drawback. Also, no "doggie bags" for uneaten food (but servings are not so large that you would need this). Service is good and prompt and the food keeps coming at a reasonable pace. Since cold plates arrive more quickly than hot ones, we advise to mix hot and cold at each order if the cold items appeal to you.
It's worth a try if you like tapas. Something we like about Macarena Tapas is that they vary the menu so that you can try new items from time to time. Located at the southeast corner of Aurora Avenue and Route 59 - store faces Aurora Ave. and is right next to ForEyes eyeglass store.
