takara - a lunchtime review

hi all,
over the weekend i hit takara in japantown for lunch, having heard good things about the place on this board. well, i was hugely disappointed. we ordered three items: a lunch box, a sashimi-tempura lunch combo, and a sansai soba. the lunch box was a great value at 5.95 or something like that and came with teriyaki chicken (weird runny sauce), california roll (standard), and a few pieces of tempura (pretty good)...it was just mediocre but so inexpensive you couldn't really complain. the combo lunch (which rang in at 12.95 or so) was just okay too. it was smaller than the lunch box with only five TINY pieces of sashimi. the tempura was pretty good. the sansai soba was so salty i couldn't drink the broth. and the rice that accompanied all the meals was mushy. service was brusque. i've heard it mentioned on this board that this is not the place to go for lunch and i'd have to agree. maybe the dinner experience is better? for a full write up plus pics go to the link below.
