I paid my first visit to the "historic" Sylvia's on Lenox Ave. last week, and found it to be perfectly mediocre. The service was beyond bad, but we figured hey, it's a little late for lunch, maybe they're short-staffed, etc. Didn't want to let that ruin what I anticipated to be a great southern meal.
The food was ok I guess, but certainly not great, and not one of the best of it's kind I've had in New York. We ordered chicken (one smothered. one fried) and a variety of sides (mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, etc.) Has anyone else had this experience? I'm trying to figure out if I was there on an off day, if the food really isn't all that great, or if I my idea of authentic southern / soul food is just not right.
I'm particularly curious because I'd like to take a couple of friends up to the neighborhood next week, and would love to find a solid dinner place. (We'd probably stay in the area for music afterward.)
Any suggestions for a good meal in Harlem? Preferably around the 125 / Lenox area. Was my idea of Sylvia's inflated? I thought it had a very good reputation. Your thoughts please.
