I should start by admitting that we live near Shangri-La in Belmont and thus are very spoiled. But the wait tonight was unusually long, it was raining, and we had read good things here about Sweet Potato Bistro and decided to give it a try. Big mistake.
Cold beef tendon appetizer was sliced way too thick and thus unpleasantly chewy. Wilted cilantro on top didn't provide desired textural contrast.
They did an ok job with pan fried turnip cake. Very large portion for about half the price of Shangri-La's version. But the runny brownish dipping sauce was cloyingly sweet, evoking watered-down supermarket bbq sauce.
Steamed pork dumplings were tough/thick and the meat had processed sausage flavor/smell.
Crispy half duck was dry, rubbery, and salted to oblivion.
Bok choy with black mushrooms were ruined by soaking in strong soy sauce.
No surprise that the place was almost empty.
