Being a longtime, major fans of the original Scottsdale location, we were thrilled to find out that another location has been added. Small strip mall place, nicely decorated, comfortable seating, good start. (SW corner of Ray & Rural) The restaurant is difficult to see from the road, look for the frozen custard place next door.
We've had a very nice lunch, then dragged our bi-monthly dinner group of 8 for a Saturday night dinner. For the owner's sake, I hope the place gets more crowded than we have seen it. Among the standouts that we tasted were the eggrolls (actually spring rolls and actually very, very good), the pad thai, cashew chicken, both Tom Yum soups were outstanding, the green mango salad (delighted everyone at the table), chicken noodles (hubbys favorite soothing food), and many really enjoyed the duck (which I found a bit dry, but redeemed with the sauce that accompanyied the dish.) The waitress also recommended the BBQ chicken. Disappointed by two mixed seafood dishes (mostly because we felt that one large shrimp per dish was skimpy and the sauces on both were one dimensional) and the green curry, which is my personal favorite, but prepared in a very thin sauce here. Thicken up that sauce and it would be amazing, since the flavor is marvelous (even better the next day).
Service perfect. Wine list had some acceptable choices at on $15/bottle. They must, unfortunately, work on the heat meter a bit. Using a scale of 1 to 5, we asked for the soup at 3. Twice, this turned out to be so hot that it created sweat and concern for a number of guests. All of whom are hot food veterans. We also had several entrees that were ordered at a 3 level and found them bland after the exploding soup. This has happend on both occasions, so my belief is that the soup chef is the culprit. Next time, we would order the soup at a level 1, and entree's up the scale.
Here's the total bills, as close as I can recall: Three mixed appetizer plates, two soups, one green papaya salad, three pad thais, two mixed seafood entrees, one green curry, one chicken cashew, one duck entree, 5 bottles of wine, a couple of iced teas, tax -- $260 before tip. (We ordered one too many soups, and one too many appetizer plates, and should have saved room for desert.)
Final thoughts: My opinion of Thai reestaurants has been unfairly skewed by LOS. If I could remove the memory of LOS from my brain, I would be thrilled to have Swaddee in my city, even more so that another branch has opened in my neighborhood. They would be among the best Thai in any city, except perhaps LV.
