Tonight I was invited with two friends to Suriya (on Valencia near 26th street). I have not been in some time but I used to go often. There was one dish there that was my "golden apple of eternal desire", my Valhalla. It was a beef dish with melt in one's mouth bok choy, fried shallots and crunchy julienned strips of ginger. It was a dish that made life worth living.
It is no longer there.
Yes they know that it was extremely popular. But they say that that cut of that kind of beef was too hard to find.
We ordered (to try and appease me) a beef salad appetizer, the green papaya salad, sea bass in a tamarind sauce, and the famous pumpkin curry with tofu.
The last dish was the best thing on the table although no fireworks.
We (I) sent back the beef salad because it was inedible and the meat (that I had to spit out) tasted off. Very chewy, could not swallow it.
The papaya salad was different than it has ever been. drenched in a sweet red sauce with a sneak-up-on-you-spicy hot kick. not yummy. (I have a thing for green papaya salad and I order it everywhere. Although I've not been to it's home country I must say that some are better than others.)
The sea bass was noticeably fishy with a very sweet "smoky" taste with little else going on except the plate was pretty.
In the end the over all feeling was that we had eaten a very sweet and one dimensional meal. I am truly sad. I will miss that beef dish and I will never eat here again. I feel bad for my roommate D. because he had never been there but had been hearing about it for years.
The space has expanded and the menu format is totally different. perhaps some major change has happened within. Does anyone know?
We left 15% tip (I almost never do this) and the total was $48 for 3. They erased the beef dish.
