Sun Chiu Kee is in a building shared with Lambda Supermarket on Centre St North between Chinatown and 16th Ave N- this is a fascinating strip with some very good eats. We had lunch there on Sunday the 12th and noticed that it's shortened its name, on window signage at least, to Sun's.
We had two orders of sliced chicken congee- spectacular with a dash of hot oil and soy sauce, but one order is huge. I was a little disappointed that there is no fried bread to accompany like some HK style places offer, but the flavour was there, really wonderful. We also split an order of "tossed noodles" (think thin ramen-style) with beef flank in curry sauce- not very appetizing looking (curry sauce looks like melted velveeta) but wow, another winner, packed with flavour and the meat is just melt-in-mouth tender.
But the highlight was a side of gai lan in oyster sauce (this is not on the lunch menu but they were happy to make us an order)- I've always like gai lan but find it to be too often woody and with a strong sort of pungent, horseradish-like note that is less than pleasant. This stuff was perfect- TENDER with a nice clean veg flavour, no pungency, and the oyster sauce was a perfect accompaniment. Lunch was too much food and was about $20.
