This might be a stupid question, but...

For people who are lactose intolerant, where are your old stand-by's to eat at and what do you recommend? I am nursing a lactose-intolerant baby and therefore I am on a strict dairy-free diet. I had a bad experience at a restaurant last Friday night where I asked that the butter be left off of my hamburger bun, and the kitchen and waitstaff proceeded to ridicule my request within earshot of my table. This, after I explained that any dairy in my diet causes stomach problems for my newborn son. No sympathy, even for a baby??? Should I have produced a doctor's note from our Pediatric GI Specialist???

I know there are the obvious choices, like ordering anything that doesn't have cheese on it. But if you're someone who suffers from lactose-intolerance, where do you like to eat at? What restaurants can you trust to take your dairy-free requests seriously? What dishes do you recommend?

Thanks for your time.
