I live in Southern Illinois and drive into St Louis about once a month or so, usually with my family.
I'm looking to collect people's very favorite St Louis joints of a Chowish persuasion, particuarly "classic" places. We've eaten lots of great Ethnic food in St Louis, but I'd like some local/old school places as well. I've never eaten on the Hill! If you do have an ethnic food treasure I could put it on my list. No neighborhood or family-friendly restrictions, but I'd like to know if a place is bad for kids so I can go when I'm alone.
I'd also like advice on the Vietnamese joints on South Grand. Any favorites or any musts to avoid down there?
I also heard a few years ago that there was a fantastic old Bagel joint in St Louis (not the Bread Co!!!) but I've never figured out what it was. Any thoughts?
PS: Just ate at the "Kabob International/Persian Cafe" on South Grand and although it was basic it was delicious. Stewed lamb was with saffron rice was from heaven. Nice setting too--two funky & beautiful rooms and nice garden seating.
PPS: I have been to Crown Candy Kitchen and to Ted Drewes and I recommend both highly.
