I tried this place one weekend for brunch and ended up going back 4 times in a row.
The hot dogs are great too, but the specials are the draw for me. On various occasions I've had fried brains (too much panko), fried sweetbreads (very good), butcher's faggots (fantastic), cured lamb sandwich (super fantastic), and scrapple (great). I'm sad I missed out on the foie gras pierogies.
And the disco fries (with ricotta and white gravy) are the best ever and cheap as hell too -- 4 bucks.
The prices are very good for some interesting and super tasty food. If those disco fries were on the menu at Brooklyn Star or Dumont, they'd probably be $14 instead of $4. And I'd probably order them anyway.
Although coming from a totally different background (NJ + UK maybe?) I felt like St. Anselm does in its sleep what BK Star tried so hard to do -- touch up comfort food with offal and great preparation.
I'm not sure what is going to happen when they get their liquor license but I hope it's more of the same.
