Square One - review

Tried Square One in Los Feliz for breakfast today - it's located on Fountain behind the Scientology Center.

Very cute little restaurant with a fantastic breakfast menu. I'm always looking for different breakfast dishes, like baked eggs, a good range of omelettes and some unexpected surprises. This menu definitely has it all.

I ordered the pressed egg sandwich, which is basically a scrambled egg sandwich with arugula, tomato and some light sauce on brioche bread. YUM. My only complaint is that brioche isn't really strong enough to hold all the ingredients together, but the taste was fantastic - you can really taste the freshness of the arugula and the eggs were perfectly cooked. I got a side of bacon, which was nicely thick but a bit undercooked (too much fat, not enough crisp). It also came with roasted potatoes, which were terrific - perfectly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. I asked for Tabasco with my ketchup, and the owner (I think he was the owner) told me he'd also bring in their salsa roja, which went really well with the potatoes. It was kind of like a chili paste, nice and spicy but with great flavor.

My friend had just eggs, medium-well, with toast, potatoes and bacon. She had the same complaint about her bacon but everything else was terrific. The five-grain bread was amazing (they told us they get it from the Bread Bar).

The service is still a bit slow...our waitress seemed a little confused and nervous, but was very friendly nonetheless. The coffee was good and the atmosphere was very warm and cozy. I will definitely be trying this place again.
