SPICE MARKET for lunch report

mrnyc | Jun 10, 2004 04:37 PM

just back from SM for lunch today. our first visit. very pretty inside esp if you are an abc carpet & home fan (they sure are).

overall very nice, but nothing earth shattering or even particularly inventive. food is served family style. the winner was the shaved tuna with lemongrass, daikon radish(?) and tapioca coconut broth appetizer. papaya salad and lime noodle dishes were also tasty. portions are small, but not tapas-style small, any three items are plenty enough for two people.

i called about 15min before we went over there today so it was easy to get in. excellent service and a very nice staff. i had a drink at the bar first ($10). house drink prices are fairly steep. we did not drink anything but tap water with the meal so the total cost was only $25. what a nice surprise to find the cost reasonable. of note: the server pointed out that the app list is served in the lounge, so you might want to focus on other items upstairs. lounge is cool, lots of private rooms down there.

if you are thinking of going i'd say lunch is an excellent way to start. same menu as pm. just prepare to not be blown away, but instead enjoy the nice atmosphere and terrific preparations of what are for the most part pan-asian standards. i'd go back and i'd like to try the fish dishes. finally and fwiw, i'd short-hand label SPICE MARKET an upscale REPUBLIC.
