Looking for best Southern BBQ in Vancouver

California Mike | Sep 6, 2003 04:04 PM

Greetings Chowhounds,
I am looking for some great BBQ eats (ideally smoked) in or around downtown Vancouver as I am new here (originally from So. California). I am especially a fan of smoky sauce covered meaty beef ribs, moist brisket, moist pulled pork, with hearty beans and slightly sweet slaw and cornbread.

I have tried Mephis Blues on Broadway which has a great pulled pork sandwhich, but I did not find their pork or beef ribs to be so great (not a lot of meat and the sauce is too mild IMOHO, so only OK), and their beans and slaw I did not find too appealing or authentic (from the many I have tried in the States). I also felt they are on the expensive side, though it is not completely ridiculously prices (CAN$13 main dinners with not so much food - the sandwhich is a better deal at $6.50/7.50 sm/lg).

I tried a good but not great place out on 1st / Rupert. Big Al's Cajun I think it was. Good with friendly atmosphere (Big Al himself is a piece of work and can sometimes be seen on City TV talking up a storm) but again this place is not great enough for the 20 min drive each way and it is buffet style, which is a minus in my book.

Any other great BBQ leads around Van would be appreciated.

thanks,

Mike
