Formerly called "Soul Food 2 Go" (the "2 Go" is painted over on the sign), this place has gotten some press. Something about more onetime Tom Jenkins employees striking out on their own or something. It's on the notthbound side of 441 on the 5100 block maybe a half mile south of Griffin.
Similar menu to the other counter-and-picnic-tables barbecues in the area, with shockingly low prices (sandwich or a few ribs with fries and slaw: $3.95! Half slab with 2 sides and cornbread: $6.95!). However, the lack of a noticeable smell of smoke when I pulled up said a lot.
I had the $5.25(!) ribs and 2-sides combo. The ribs were gray and tender enogh but not really smoky. They seemed boiled and baked with the texture of Chinese-takeout spare ribs, not dry-smoked over wood.
The sides, on the other hand (I had the mac and cheese and the collards) were very good: as good as or better than any I've had in the area--though I should mention that Jack's sides seem to have improved in recent months. The ribs I had just weren't in the same class, though, and for most people that's the main event. If you're in that neck of the woods and you want decent soul food, it's worthwhile enough, but unless I caught them on a weird day when they were microwaving leftovers, it's nothing special.
The owner and his helper seemed like nice guys, so that counts for something, too.
