Never have we been so misled by a restaurant review as we were last weekend when my husband took me to Slates in Mineola for Valentine's Day, after reading a fairly good review of it in Newsday last Friday. It's a place we pass by very frequently and have been curious about--well, no longer! Our curiosity has been sated and at a very steep price!
First off, Joan Reminick's review in Newsday stated that most entrees were priced "under $20." There wasn't one under $20. Albeit, it was Valentine's Day and in addition to being very turned off by any restaurant gouging prices for Valentine's Day period, Slates prices were so high as to be laughable.
The menu was one of those "special menu" deals, with only about five appetizers and entrees to choose from. Don't you hate that?
I had four (count em'...four) medium sized shrimp on plaintains with a hoisin sauce appetizer which clocked in at a whopping $13. If I'm not mistaken, I believe all the appetizers were $10 and up. And the portions were miniscule. I know, I know, why did I order it? Because I love plaintains! And, well, it was Valentine's Day...and well, i'm still kicking myself over it. It was tasty...but would have tasted better had it been $7!
I had perch ( a fish you rarely see on a menu) with a light cream caviar sauce, which was quite good,but served with a measly portion of okay mashed potatoes. No complaints here, other than the $24 price tag.
But, my Husband's "Beef and Reef", for $32...was a joke. A few shrimp and a semi-tasteless piece of skirt steak, without even the benefit of a marinade. Trust me, what we make in our broiler at home is ten times better.
The service was severely lacking. There appeared to be one harried waiter for the entire full dining room. I think we saw him at our table twice. (Poor guy... I hope his tips were good.) And a few other mixed up acting folks wandering the room.
Trust me...spend your dining dollars elsewhere.
And, ALWAYS take restaurant reviews with a grain of salt...
