Nan Xiang must be one of the most under-rated chicken rice spots in Singapore - not helped by the fact that it's located in Novena, across the road from the old-school, very popular, ever-crowded Wee Nam Kee chicken rice restaurant.
Nan Xiang serves its chicken rice in balls, wrapped in grease-proof paper. Unwrap one of those balls and you'd immediately catch the delicious waft of Nan Xiang's very aromatic chicken rice - one of the best in Singapore, in fact.
Nan Xiang's poached chicken is also perfectly done - silken-smooth flesh, deliciously gelatinous skin, perfectly-seasoned with good quality light soy sauce, sesame oil and intensely-flavored chicken stock.
A side bowl of soup with pork-prawn dumplings was also delicious.
On a whim, and perhaps buoyed by the excellent chicken dish, I placed an extra order for the Gong Bao pork dish which, on the picture menu, looked delicious, and seemed a perfect accompaniment to the chicken rice. Sadly, it didn't work out: somehow, the spicy-sweet-salty flavors of the Gong Bao pork just couldn't gel with the rich, flavorsome chicken rice the way Hainanese stir-fries (e.g. those at Yet Con) can:
