What a find this place is! The restaurant is in an unassuming building in a "head-scratching" location -- at the NW corner of 34th Avenue South and East 56th Street, across the street from the VFW hall (six blocks south of Marimar for those who know that restaurant).
The menu is limited (11 entrees, 3 starters) and boasts "Southeast Asian and Ethiopian Cuisine." Some dishes belong firmly in one camp v. the other, but there is some fusion as well. The decor is very nice (linen-covered tables, wine glasses, etc.) obviously encouraging more of a dine-in than a take-out approach.
I had the Asian/Ethio Spicy Lamb and my wife had a vegetarian entree titles Sambal Sayur-Sayuran. Both dishes (and I would guess much of the menu items) are spicy, but there's more to the spice than pure heat. The flavor is very rich and layered - the heat has a flavoring agent purpose, making the dishes (these two at any rate) very complex. The Captain's Curry boasts 27 spices "to begin with," and is indicated as a favorite in Maplewood -- this restaurant is related to Singapore Chinese Cuisine located there.
There is a small beer and wine selection. BYO is not allowed. Although the printed menu is limited, Singapore! will make dishes not on the menu, and I plan to put myself in their hands on the next visit.
