My first Cambodian meal in Singapore (previous experiences have all been in Oakland or San Francisco, CA) - the dishes all tasted quite Thai-like, but without the chilli-heat. Khmer Delight restaurant stood out as the only Cambodian restaurant in town, and it occupied an interesting spot in Siglap, right across the road from a bustling row of restaurants which also happened to include a trio of well-known Thai restaurants: Lemongrass, Thai Express, and the indomitable A-Roy Thai.
What we had:
- Banana blossom salad with shredded chicken. It was interesting - refreshing, but lacks the bite of a Thai yam salad;
- Crisp-fried spring rolls filled with ground pork & Asian yam (num cha gio pale) - again, familiar tastes, yet somehow a bit different;
- Chicken soup with marrow vegetable, pineapple chunks & tomatoes (samlor machu). I liked this soup - the subtle, slightly sourish flavors were quite pleasing;
- Amok Trey - a Cambodian take on Thai hor-mok. This dish was DELICIOUS!! Very coconut-rich & creamy, but definitely the best dish on the table this evening.
- Grilled (roasted?) eggplants with minced pork (cha traop dot). Bland (where's the prahok when you need it?)
- Kari Khmer with prawns and banana blossoms. Again, in typical Cambodian fashion, it's very blandish, especially to Singaporean tastes which are used to more heat from our Nyonya, Malay, and South Indian spicy cooking styles.
I'm curious about the chicken curry which another table ordered, and would probably come back to Khmer Delight for it.
The lone waitress (Filipina) did an admirable job to make us feel welcome - very friendly, and served with minimum fuss and absolute efficiency.
