Sichuan Garden's rabbit in red Chengdu sauce: wow

This is from the xeroxed specials menu. The word “sauce” is misleading, I was expecting one of the many chili vinaigrettes. The skin on the cool chunks of bone-in rabbit is colored a lurid roast-pork red; that marinade is the only “sauce” involved. But oh my, the flavor—as much an aroma as a flavor, actually, a little fruitiness that evokes sweetness but isn’t, a little spiciness that’s somehow familiar and somehow not… The closest I can come is cough syrup (but in a good way). Maybe some camphor? Served with a little dish of red chili & Sichuan pepper-salt. Interesting, unusual, delicious.
