A couple weeks ago I stopped by Danilo Bakery in North Beach to get a slice for an afternoon snack. While I was waiting for it to be warmed up for me, I noticed sfogliatelle in the case. Both kinds are available, made with the puff pastry-like thin and crispy dough filled with citrus-y ricotta as well as the heavier turnover like dough filled with apples.
I went with the crispy one and found it pretty good, not as many layers as the examples I’ve had on the East Coast. But since these are scarce on the ground in California, I was satisfied.
Pizza was pretty good too and cheap. Clean, unsweetened tomato sauce, very thin crust, and I liked the garlic flakes offered in the shaker. Nice to take a sidewalk seat on a sunny day here.
