This is Charles Yu's fault. See his thread on best dish ever. It got me and my wife talking about it.
Mine was had about 30 years ago. We were in Taipei at the time. It was small eels, deboned, and stir fried with whole szchuan (? small) peppers. Half the dish was eels and half was peppers. You had to be careful, because both were black in color. Biting into a pepper was painful... as I remember. I had the dish twice in a week and then left for home. It was a szchuan restaurant near Zhong Shan N. Rd and somewhere north of Minchuan W Rd. It was on the second floor. That's the best I can do with directions.
I doubt that the place is still there, ... but one could always hope.
These are not the regular big eels, but small ones about 5 or 6 inches long and about half inch in diameter.
Well I'm back in Taipei area for another 3 weeks. Does anyone know where I can find this dish? God, my mouth is watering ... after 30+ years.
