In search of . . . tomatillo salsa

There's nothing I like better than a bright, flavorful (not too spicy, but not bland, no siree) tomatillo salsa to grace my tacos. So, I've been on a hunt for the best tomatillo salsa in the Bay Area, specifically Hayward, San Leandro, Castro Valley and Oakland.

I have to cast my vote for the tomatillo salsa conjured up at El Burrito Loco in Castro Valley. Located in the Albertson's strip mall off of CV Blvd and Redwood Rd., El Burrito Loco offers your typical not very innovative Mexican food. However, their grilled chicken tacos on homemade corn tortillas blessed only with the tomatillo salsa are mighty tasty.

The owner selfishly has refused to reveal the recipe for the salsa. He thinks I might stop eating at his little spot, and he just may be right. As near as I can tell, the salsa is perfectly spiced with lime, garlic, tomatillos (duh) and avocado. Not a pure tomatillo salsa, but who cares when its that good.

And, even though the chips do not appear to be homemade, slathered with the T.S., they are, to me, inspirational.

P.S. El Burrito Loco also has a mighty fine chile verde, but the sauce is a little thin. In addition to the tomatillo salsa, Burrito Loco offers a salsa cruda, a hotter chipotle sauce and a flavorful salsa de chile arbol (I think arbol but not sure).
