In Search of...The Zen of Ribs and Pie!

HELLO AUSTIN CHOWHOUNDS!

I AM NEW TO AUSTIN RECENTLY MOVED FROM SAN FRANCISCO(NATIVE DAUGHTER). I AM ALSO BRAND NEW TO CHOWHOUND. I AM AT A DISADVANTAGE, BEING SOMEWHAT SPOILED BY MY EXPOSURE TO AN EXCELLENT VARIETY AND QUALITY OF RESTURANTS IN THE SF BAY AREA, SO IT'S BEEN DIFFICULT FOR ME TO FIND PLACES HERE THAT I LIKE (I KNOW THIS SOUNDS A LITTLE SNOOTY; I AM FAIRLY HARD TO PLEASE). I HAVE A PARTICULAR FONDNESS FOR BARBEQUE BEEF RIBS, AND HAVEN'T FOUND A PLACE I HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH HERE YET. I AM USED TO THE RIBS BEING ACTUALLY COOKED WITH THE BBQ SAUCE ON THEM (LIKE THEY DO IN NORTHERN CAL). HERE, IT SEEMS THEY LIKE TO COOK 'EM SANS SAUCE AND THEN SERVE YOU A "SIDE" OF RED STUFF, USUALLY COLD AND TASTEING LIKE GLORIFIED CATSUP... AND STILL, THEY CALL IT BBQ? WHAT GIVES? I HAVE BEEN TO SEVERAL PLACES WHERE THIS SEEMS TO BE THE TREND, SO I ASSUME IT IS THE WAY THINGS ARE HERE AND I GUESS I AM JUST BEING A SNOB ABOUT IT...BUT OLD HABITS DIE HARD AND I AM REALLY HOPING TO FIND A PLACE WHERE THE BBQ SAUCE AND THE MEAT ARE ONE...GRASSHOPPER! ("I DON'T KNOW, MASTER, IT JUST SEEMS TO ME THE SAUCE AND MEAT OUGHT TO MEET BEFORE THEY GET TO THE PLATE...").

OF THE VARIOUS PLACES I HAVE BEEN TAKEN; HILL'S CAFE; GREAT ATMOSPHERE; LOUSEY DRY RIBS WITH PATHETIC SAUCE (PORK/NO BEEF), LOGAN'S STEAK HOUSE; OK...BUT ONLY SERVES PORK RIBS, FUSHACK'S IN SAN MARCOS; NICE TENDER JUICEY RIBS (PORK ONLY AGAIN)...BUT THE SIDE DISH OF "BBQ SAUCE" INEDIBLE.

I HAVE SCANNED SOME OF THIS SIGHTS COMMENTS REGARDING GOOD BBQ, SUCH AS PLACES IN LOCKHART AND LULING, ETC., BUT PLEASE TELL ME IF THEY ALL DO THE SAME THING AS FAR AS THE WAY THEY COOK 'EM HERE WITHOUT ANY ACTUAL SAUCE ON THEM PRIOR TO PLATESIDE...IF SO, MAYBE I WILL GIVE UP LOOKING AND BECOME A VEGETARIAN!!!

ALSO, I HAVE AN ONGOING QUEST FOR THE PERFECT SLICE OF KEY LIME PIE (REAL KEY LIME PIE). I FOUND ONE PLACE WHERE I HAD A PASSABLE EXPERIENCE WITH A FAIRLY DECENT SLICE AT FLORIDA SEAFOOD GRILL(183/GREAT HILLS TRAIL). FOR THE PERFECT ZEN EXPERIENCE REQUIRE THE PIE TO BE NON-GREEN (NO ARTIFICIAL COLORING) AND WITH A DENSE (NOT FLUFFY) FILLING, WITH THE TRADITIONAL GRAHAM CRUST;MOIST AND YIELING TO THE FORK, BUT NOT DRY AND CRUMBLING.... AND HALFWAY DECENT WHIP CREAM THAT ISN'T JUST AN AFTERTHOUGHT. ANYBODY KNOW ANY GREAT PIE PLACES...?? (PLEASE DON'T SAY MARIE CALLENDERS;BEEN THERE;DONE THAT;GOT THE KEY LIME). I ALSO HAVE A FONDNESS FOR PERFECT PECAN PIE, BUT THAT HAS BEEN EVEN MORE EVASIVE THAN THE KEY LIME. I HAVE HEARD THAT SAN SABA IS THE PLACE TO GO FOR THE LATTER?

ANY HELP IN MY QUESTS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
