For anyone who has been following the saga of Sciortino's Brick Oven Pizza as it battled the Perth Amboy municipal government in an attempt to stay open and save its 72 year old coal fed brick pizza oven (see below), the saga is drawing to a close.
Sciortino's has settled with the municpal government for $750,000 and as of July 30, 2003, arguably the best pizzeria in the NY-NJ area will be bulldozed to the ground. They will open in a new location but it is not clear that they will be able to dismantle and rebuild the brick oven. The coast of that alone is estimated at $600,000. Get it while you can.
"On March 22, 2002, over ten families and five businesses on property adjoining New Brunswick Avenue in Perth Amboy, NJ, were noticed that their property would be taken by the city for parking for its proposed new municipal complex.
The block, located on New Brunswick Avenue, near Amboy Avenue, is home to several well established businesses, including a turn of the century coal-fed brick pizza oven, one of the last remaining in the northeast."
