Santa Cruz: A few random morsels...

1) Pizza My Heart (various loc. in SF and Monterey Bay regions; see link)
Ordered delivery from the downtown SC loc. last week during peak dinnertime. Got the large Wingnut Special (pepperoni, red onion, mushrooms). Guy on phone said 1 hr. but came in about 40 min. $21 for 18" w/ no charge for tax or delivery (good deal!!). Driver was tipped well. Pizza was piping hot and looked HUGE (bigger than other 18"ers I've had). Thin yeasty-smelling crust, well-proportioned toppings that weren't overloaded. Sauce on the sweeter side but didn't go overboard, pepperoni had a kick, onions were slightly caramelized w/ some raw bite in center, good-quality cheese w/ no pool of grease. Crust had a nice chewy resistance, if maybe a bit too much at the edge. Overall, a VERY GOOD pizza (esp. for delivery) w/ good service from phone to door. Better than most pizzas I've had in LA. Yea, no more Dominoes!!

2) Soif (www.soifwine.com)
Went for their usual Sat. wine tasting from 3-5pm; came around 4pm. Bar was nearly full and few tables were filled. Theme was "holiday bubbles." Disappointed since bubblies aren't my thing, but tried a few anyway. Each 1 oz. tasting was $1-2; like that you can pick-and-choose instead of being committed to a whole flight (a lightweight, I always get too buzzed). Tried a few things, but liked most: Bortolotti Prosecco (extra-dry) and Jean Milan Cuvee Tendresse (sec grand cru). Bypassed limited menu of small plates, but salad and cheese plate that I spied looked good. Wines IMO are generally good there and affordable from their store; HOWEVER, both times I've been, I've found the staff to be very awkward and self-conscious, like they avoid any real talk about wines for fear that their lack of knowledge will come through. Sitting at bar, also got a good view of kitchen staff and tension in that place was so thick, you could BARELY cut it w/ a knife. Not sure what was up. Weird vibe from the moment we walked in (maitre'd looked befuddled when I inquired about doing a tasting) to the moment we left (cashier had no clue what next week's tasting was going to be and didn't make any movement to find out). Odd enough behavior that I won't be returning anytime soon. Oh well, wine selection at Shopper's Corner is better anyway...

3) Dungeness at Yacht Harbor
Trekked out on Sat. around noon to feed my addiction and saw a couple of boats at the R and S docks selling live crab. Boat "Gayle" (which we bought from last time for $4/lb.) was there, but thought we'd check out boat "Lou Denny..." at S dock. Guy was selling for $3.5/lb. and we got 2 that nearly tallied 5 lbs. Both were scarily feisty w/ limbs fully intact. Guy said he usually sells on the weekends and on Wed. As always, tasty critters...
