San Diego Report (very long)

The Chowpup and I made our Petco Park pilgrimage (from L.A.) this past weekend and ate at:

Pizza Port (Carlsbad): I've always LOVED this place. They brew great beer, serve others' brews, and have great "American style" pizza (think BJ's brewpup & pizzeria but delicious). Perfect to sip 'n' snack alone at the bar or at the large communal tables. Good for groups, though it can get crowded and loud (in a good way). If it's your first time be fore warned it's an "order your pizza here, and your beer there, grab a table and listen for your name" type of place so if your with a group split up the tasks. Highly recommended ! ( I'm so high on this place I will in the future make the trek to thier San Clemente location every few months for lunch.) ("worth the drive" lists, anyone ?)

Rancho La Lena (old Towne): My first choice (El Agave) was closed and Old Towne Mexican Cafe had a 30+ minute wait (even when I said We two could happily eat in the space of one). We headed down the street to R.L.L.. When you go from a CROWDED 30+ min. wait to a block and half away and a similar place that's EMPTY...red flag ? Not in this case.
I probably wouldn't send anybody here but if you find youself in the above situation, don't hesitate to head there. We had a tasty chicken enchillada, un-gresey beef taquitos, and a so-so bean and rice and cheese burrito. They make a very nice salsa and hot sauce to. Fairly priced.

Cafe 222 (Gaslamp): Pet peeve 1: If you're a small b-fast place you HAVE to serve GREAT coffee. They got off to a bad start. Had a swiss cheese and ham scramble. Generic ham with thinly diced cheese that was more clumpy than anything, and we LOVE cheese. Pet peeve 2: If you tout you're baked goods that should include breads/toast. It wasn't Wonder but "show me the wrapper !" Nice people. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I wouldn't recommed it.

Petco Park: Did just a passing assessment here (we'd eaten so much already). Chain-supplied hot dogs, Rubio's is huge here but lost on me, pizza that "looked" okay, an EMPTY stir fry stand (see Rancho La Lena). Bad popcorn. No interesting brews. IMHO. It's a ball park, "res ipsa.."

Hope this adds to the 'Hound-mmunity !
