San Diego cheap eats from former local

Greetings to SD Chowhounds. I am returning to town for a conference soon and have 1 dinner, 1 early breakfast and 1 lunch to plan for just myself. Being a former SDiegan, I have a requisite stop at Point Loma SeaFood and Holy Cross cemetery, but was hoping to get recs for good cheap places that are still in business. My former hang-outs; Chicken Pie Shop, Hob Nob Hill, PLS, China King and Keith's in National City, DZ Akins, BBQ Pit. Would like to try to stay south of Clairmont Mesa and west of La Mesa, the conference is near the convention center on the waterfront. Still can't afford La Jolla Prospect Street places, maybe after the student loans dissapear! Where are you all going for non-fancy, affordable, worknight, dog-tired, good comfort food these days?
