We were looking forward to Bockwurst at Gazzolo's. Turns out it is closed in the evening. I asked the locals hanging out on the street where else I could get a good meal. They suggested I go down to Hospitality Lane - a sad suggestion. After puzzling a moment, I asked if maybe there was a BBQ place around.
Three blocks later we're at Ruby's - 801 W. Highland, a block or so east of I215, south side of the street. Great pork ribs, chicken, candied yams, collard greens and sweet potato pie. The chef (at least that night) is a gentlman named Joe who previously was a chef in Oklahoma City. We didn't think to ask about how hot the sauce was and we were served a very mild sauce. They have hotter.
Maybe there needs to be a line on the chowhound passport for white dudes venturing into the 'hood.
