I used to be a big fan of Salute on 108th in Rego Park. Creamy babaganoush, crispy pickles, warm Uzbeki bread, and, most of all, the moist, flavorful kebabs. Then, there was a period when they didn't seem to care as much. I still liked the place, but sometimes the meat would be dry, or the bread not as fresh as it could be.
I went back recently, and low and behold, it seemed to be back to its old self. The minced meat kebab (not the name on the menu, but that's what it is) and the chicken were extraordinary, the bread was hot, the babaganoush as creamy as butter.
Uphill alert? Or did I just hit them at the right time. Either way, I'd be back.
