Salts- disappointed

Last night a friend took me to Salts for my 45th birthday. I was very excited because of the reviews I had seen and the raves on this board. The meal was okay, but nothing spectacular. For the price alone I had expected food a bit more "special". For $98.00 including tax and tip we each had a glass of $6.00 wine; we split the mushroom appetizer; my friend had the halibut and I had the duck and I watched my friend eat the flan for dessert. All-in-all, nothing "popped" for me... the flavors were much too subtle, verging on bland. The portions were small (and I don't eat a lot at 115 lbs). Even the bread was disappointing- a non-descript crusty round loaf with butter.... like I said: nothing special. As you may know the room is small yet it never filled and there were at least six empty tables when we left at 9:00pm. The waiter was attentive yet incredibly stern and overly descriptive (I felt) in his use of adjectives when describing the dishes. It would have been nice to see a smile or two every once in a while. Wondering if my expectations were too high (my favorite restaurants these days are Centro, Cuchi Cuchi, Green St. & the Independent- all places where I have had a much better meal at a much more reasonable price)... or was the restaurant off because it was a Tuesday night?
