SALEM: Thai Beer...

Had a meeting in Salem today and decided to test out some Chowhound recommended spots. Printed out reports from SalemJan and Amecameca.

Met for lunch at Thai Beer just north of Hwy 22 on Lancaster. It's in a strip mall and has comfortable and pleasant, but not especially nice, decor.

The lunch menu was fairly limited (but a good value), so I asked for the full menu, which was much more extensive and interesting. We ordered the red curry with chicken, green curry with beef (both from the lunch menu, and the nam kao tod salad.

The curries were both rather thin, even though we both got them hot, but still decent. They would have been a lot better with more coconut cream and more paste per portion. The vegetables in them were cooked nicely and the portions were sizable. The meats were typically cooked for Thai places, ie, not as well as they could be.

The salad, a larb alternative with ground pork, ginger, rice patties, peanuts, etc, was pretty good. The rice patties had a nice sourness to them. It was also huge. A very good portion.

The service, especially after we were done, was pretty slow. It took us forever to order ice cream (which wasn't very good). But it's a good spot and I think that Amecameca's claim that it would hold its own in Portland is fair, though it wouldn't be among the best.
