Sai Organic Health Food opens in Astoria!!!

I am so pumped about this I can barely contain myself. Sai Organics, which has been in progress seemingly forever, opened for business today. Just stopped in on my way home and the place absolutely radiates good vibe. They're on 30th Ave. between 36th and 37th streets, and have taken over a fairly spacious location that used to house a laundromat. It's run by a truly charming and friendly couple, and they're carrying a lot of good, non filler, health food products already, even though about 35% of the shelf space is as yet unoccupied. They will carry vitamins too, but happily it doesn't seem as if this will be their main focus. Oh...and organic produce (but not yet)! Also a juice bar up front. The couple (Sahid and Lizette) built the place themselves, slowly and carefully, and it has the potential to develop into a really beautiful shop (once loose ends are cleared away).

In my opinion the lack of a quality healthfood store has been one of the major drawbacks of this generally culinarily excellent nabe (2 other drawbacks: no good smoked salmon; no dark bread).

The few customers who were in there tonight all seemed excited and slightly dazed - I really hope people will support this place so that they stick around. Henceforth I'm buying all my groceries there. Prices, from what I could tell, seemed reasonable.
