Sabor in Austin - HOLY COW, BATMAN!!!!!

ohmygod, Rudeboy! You couldn't have been more on suggesting this place. It is SO worth seeking out!

where to begin...okay we get there and no one speaks a lick of English (good sign in my book, cept my Spanish is 20 years old rusty...i still manage). They peg us for weak mouthed gringos and bring out a wonderful, but mild salsa and chips. I then asked if they had any other salsas in the back and she looked at me skeptically, but brought out a lovely tomatillo salsa and what I suspect was a guajillo salsa. When she saw us happily devour them, the cook and she appeared with big, amused smiles and more salsas to try. (oh boy!). All of them were unique and wonderful (I still have that nice, warm tingling on my lips).

We decided the best way to try a little of everything was to order the a la carte tacos. I got the Chilanguito ($1.75), the Conchinita Pibil ($1.50). Hubbie got the Picadillo ($1.50) and the Chilanguito as well. We shared the Pastor ($1.50). Let me say they were all (and I don’t use this word lightly) awesome! Light, clean NON-FALL-APART corn tortillas wonderful, fresh ingredients, flavorful-moist meats.

The Chilanguito had Pastor meat (done differently than the pastor taco with a different marinade and cut in long strips – more on the pastor in a sec) with roasted pablano peppers and onions, cheese. Not greasy, and smoky in flavor.

The Conchinita Pibil had a wonderful citrus tone and the pork was done like a roast and was served in 2” pull-apart chunks. Moist, moist, moist. Sauce was just wonderful.

Pastor was grilled and had those yummy crunchy “burnt” parts but was not dry or chewy. Again, wonderful marinade they used. Nice, fresh cilantro and onion on top, the way it should be.

I can’t tell you about the Picadillo, cuz I was completely stuffed and couldn’t even manage a bite, but hubbie says most Picadillo he’s had is usually kinda dull and this had a nice kick to it.

Friendly staff, great food…and I picked up a flyer that says they have a lunch and dinner buffed for $6.99 and “Bring your own beer. We’ll provide ice and appetizers buffet from 3:00 to 6:00 and come join us watching your favorite sport team” heck. Can’t beat that with a fork…
