Yesterday I went to lunch at Gramercy Tavern, for RW. The menu surprised me since there were 5 choices for each course. My friend and I shared the entire meal but stuck with the meats for the two courses.
For apps, we shared the calamari and carrot salad - crunchy, sweet carrots with slightly chewy, finely chopped calamari. It was good but it needed something acidic to brighten this dish. The other appetizer was the lamb papparadelle - soft, melt-in-your-mouth, earthy lamb meets soft, eggy, wide pasta with punches of salty-brininess from the olives. We liked this very much.
The entrees, my friend opted for the grilled sirloin with beef ravioli, snap peas, and eggplant - salty, crisp crust meets tender, slightly juicy beef. What I LOVED about her dish were the vegetables! I was swooned by the snap peas. They tasted like the essence of sugary sweet peas with lots of crunch. The eggplant was good but not as earth shattering as those peas. I had the braised shoulder of lamb (yes, I went lamb overload). It was fork-tender, not gamy, and we loved the melt-in-your-mouth texture.
As for dessert, we went for the fruits since it's summer, why not go for something seasonal? My friend had the peach pie with lemon verbena ice cream - great pate sucree with the sweet peaches and the creamy, herbal-lemony ice cream highlighted the fruit's flavor. I had the blackberry streusel cake with blackberry lime sherbert. The cake was moist, a bit light and crunch from the streusel (my favorite part) packed with a lot of sweet-tart blackberries. The sherbert made it interesting and a tad more decadent.
After we paid our check, we received a gift certificate for a future lunch, which topped off the already great RW experience. My friend and I have every intention of coming back to Gramercy Tavern.
