Four of us went last night at the former Le Colonial site on Beverly Blvd. and all of us had one of the worst meals in living memory.
They call themselves "modern Chinese", perhaps code words for trendy inedible food--and it's very expensive.
We tried 3 appetizers, shrimp on a stick with a dipping sauce, both tasteless, ribs, tasteless and so-called lobster egg rolls that smelled and tasted "off".
It's a small menu and the only thing my wife and the other couple thought appealing was the Kung Pau (Sp.) chicken. It came lukewarm and dry. I opted for the tea-smoked steak covered with some twee-sounding sauce that unfortunately tasted like bad pot roast. I left it and the other took it for their dog, who will hopefully survive the experience!
The waiter came over to ask "how everything was", and I told him. He seemed appalled and offered to change the entree. I said thanks, but never mind.
The food bill was $140 and we didn't penalize the waiter for our bad experience.
Disclaimer: I'm prepared to believe they had an off-night, but I doubt it. I'm also prpared to believe that it will be successful as it caters to the trendy set, where food is not the leading criterion for going.
For chowhounds however, don't say I didn't warn you!
