ON to the food......(so I dont get deleted)
I have always sensed some reverse elitism on the chowhound board. There are the people who like the fine dining thing and some who are more interested in"$7 sandwiches". The latter group always seem to scoff at more ambitious food operations and that is just wrong and hypocritical.
There are indeed places that serve pretentious food across the board..
Le Bus Thai turkey salad. "No turkey dishes in Thailand".....???
Capital grille dry aged choice meat as opposed to prime.....What is the point ???
Buddakan chocolate pagoda......the most aburd dessert in the city.
Jones.....signature dish (on the second day of operation) mac and Cheese.
Tacconellis...reservation of dough... what is the point, its just flour , water and yeast. ???
See, pretense is everywhere.
Pretense however should not be confused with Innovation. It stifles creativity. part of the reason NYC outpaces philly is people are much more open minded.
I had lunch at Tony lukes and dinner at Salt and both were excellent. the chicken cutlet italiano with broccoli rabe was good but it doesnt mean the hanger steak with crepinette of short ribs is pretentious.
