So this one threw me for a doozy, but my friend has strict dietary restrictions that don't really follow any sort of conventional rules. I figure I'd throw it out there. He:
-is an All-American kinda guy. When I asked him what he'd eat if he could eat anything, he said something like a big sloppy Arby's sandwich. "Er...maybe not" was my reply.
-cannot eat anything with MSG in it. CRUCIAL!!
-cannot eat anything with too much sugar in it
-cannot eat too much red meat
-cannot eat fish
-can eat small amounts of white meat
-does not want to go vegetarian
-kind of needs to stay away from hard foods
-doesn't like dairy (cheese, milk, cream, you name it)
-is getting really sick of oatmeal and eggs
My feeling is, with these recs, if he can't eat in SF there's no hope of him finding food anywhere else.
What are some restaurants that are very careful with the source and preparation of their food, but serve down home American fare? Am I wrong to assume that most non-Asian restaurants in SF do not use MSG, or should I still ask the kitchen when I make a reservation?
My friend's big fear is that if he says "No MSG," restaurants will think he's just on some kind of fad diet or chooses to avoid MSG. They might not realize that it's a serious health concern for him. It must get really annoying explaining to strangers the minutiae of his health.
Thanks for your help, 'hounds. My friend just recently started getting cravings for real food, and I really want to make sure he gets a great meal to welcome back his appetite (and put some meat on his bones)!
