It’s my husband’s birthday this weekend and I want to take him out for a nice dinner. One small problem, though: he is allergic to onions (and everything in the onion family, like shallots, scallions, leeks, etc.). Not severely allergic, but enough to ruin a nice meal if he were to ingest any. Because of this, we are cautious of any cuisine that relies heavily on onions for flavouring, or might make use of pre-made sauces/marinades (there was only one item at my favourite Indian restaurant that he could eat!).
Can anyone offer recommendations that aren’t steakhouses or tasting menus? I’m hoping to find a place that has a few items which are totally onion-free, or which can easily be taken out without compromising the flavour/integrity of the dish. And, of course, attentive service to ensure that this is taken care of for us properly (we’ve encountered a lot of difficulty in restaurants – like the chef might remove all the onions in the actual dish, but then absent-mindedly throw on some chives as garnish, thus rendering it inedible). We both like sushi, so I was considering Yuzu, but we were just at Sushi Kaji two weeks ago and I’m afraid it would be underwhelming in comparison – would this assessment be accurate? Would Origin be a good choice? I'm open to any and all suggestions, as I'm sure there are quite a few which would work. I don't really have a budget, and we'd like to keep it downtown, if possible.
