I'm new to this board, and have been extremely impressed with the info everyone's been willing to share. Instead of responding to a post, this time I have a question for anyone who'd like to offer input.
In a couple of weeks (Fri. Dec. 28) a great friend of mine who almost never comes into the city anymore is going to meet me in midtown when I finish work, and I'm taking him to see McCoy Tyner at Iridium for the 10.30 pm show.
We're probably gonna meet around 5-ish, so we have plenty of time before the show, so obviously dinner and drinks are in order.
Here's the thing: we're gonna have to do something relatively inexpensive, because he doesn't have a lot of money, and he's too much of a pain in the ass to accept allowing me to pay for the whole evening. The other thing, though, is we're both in our early 40s, and are probably gonna want a relatively comfortable place (not a dive or a dreary dull spot) to spend a few hours complaining about our wives, and the fact that this adventure is a relatively rare thing for us (he's only come into the city to meet me once in like the last five or six years)makes me want even more to have a low-budget but fun evening.
We're going to have a lot of time, so going downtown then coming back to midtown for the show isn't a problem. I like every type of cuisine, and am extremely adventurous--he's less so, but may be open to new suggestions.
So if anyone's got any ideas for places to go under these constraints, I'd love to hear them.
